Ovulation monitoring eg Clomid induced cycle:

At your first scan we will perform a baseline check to determine the position, size & shape of your womb and to check if there are any fibroids or polyp’s present.

To monitor ovulation we look for the development of follicles in the ovary, the egg will be developing withing the follicle. On the scan follicles appear as black, circular fluid filled bubbles. These increase in size by 1-2mm per day and are ready for ovulation when the follicle measures between 18-25mm.

Following ovulation the egg is released and the follicle collapses becoming irregular in shape, this is called the corpus luteum and confirms that ovulation has taken place. Fluid from the follicle can sometimes be seen in the pelvis.

During the cycle the lining of the womb, endometrium, changes to receive the fertilize egg, this change can be monitored on the scan. In the lead up to ovulation the endometrium appears as three thin lines and following ovulation it changes becoming brighter.

Timing of Scans

Timing is very individual and does depend upon the length of the menstrual cycle. Typically in a woman with a 28 day cycle scans will be performed around day 11, 13 & 15. The exact timing will depend upon your cycle length and the stage of follicular development on each scan. The aim is to identify the dominant follicle and to track growth of this follicle and confirm ovulation on the final scan.

Possible problems identified include:

  • Failure of follicles to develop
  • Failure of ovulation
  • Insufficient thickness of endometrium
